"Finders keepers" defence doesn't hold up in court

GOOMBOORIAN woman Sharon Leanne Marshall found out the hard way that the "finders keepers" rule need not apply when it comes to the law.

Gympie Magistrates Court heard the 40-year-old was shopping at Woolworths at Gympie Central when she took advantage of an opportunity.

A shopper who had used a self-service checkout prior to her had forgotten to take $50 cash out. When Marshall used the checkout, she noticed the cash was left behind and pocketed it.

But she was caught out when the owner of the money returned to the store and spoke to staff.

They were then able to track down who had walked off with the money. The court heard Marshall was "mortified" to be in court and had thought of the find as her good luck rather than stealing.

She pleaded guilty to one charge of stealing and was fined $300 and ordered to reimburse the victim their $50.
