Fierce dreads boost mojo of Magpies player

STEVE Brookes has a menacing build and appearance, made all the more fearsome by his dreadlocks poking out everywhere.

The hair makes Brookes appear bigger than he is.

And at this stage the hair is not going anywhere, but it is not for a threat that he keeps them.

"My mum doesn't want me to cut them," he said.

"She was sick and had no hair so I said I would grow it for her."

From a close family, Brookes grew up in the rugby league heartland of Western Sydney.

But the Miriam Vale Magpie bucked the trend and did not begin playing the sport until he was 16.

Now he just loves the game and joined the Miriam Vale team soon after arriving in town four years ago.

The 27-year-old hardly thought back then that he would get the opportunity to play immediately after a Queensland Cup match.

The only problem now is who to support in the Central Queensland Capras and Souths Logan battle.

"Souths Logan are the Magpies, we are the Magpies, but Capras are the team from here," he said.

The big hope from Brookes is to see the crowd hang around for the entire night.

"I like the fact they take the time to come down and spend some time in the little towns," he said.

"Especially when the coaches that are coming are so good, and the players.

"Hopefully the crowd don't disappear, they stick around for our game."

Brookes promised a good game of rugby league, and said the young talent in the Magpies squad would put on a show.

"It will be good, we have some new players here, and some young kids," Brookes said.

"Some kids who can do some work for us."
