Feast for league fans at Oval
LEAGUE fans flocked to Marley Brown Oval for the first week of the local finals and were spoilt for action.
Gladstone Rugby League president Glenn Butcher was pleased over a thousand people went through the gate on Sunday.
“We were happy with that and about on target for what we aimed for,” Butcher said.
With six finals played on the day, it was a feast for fans who were there from 10am until 7.45pm.
“The standard was very high in all the matches, and the main game between rivals Brothers and Wallabys was a very physical contest,” he said.
Patrons also jammed themselves into the Pig Pen, which made a much-welcome return, Butcher said, and Muddies players in full Mad Sunday swing after their season ended the day before, added to the party atmosphere.
Butcher said Rockhampton’s decision to play finals on Saturday night would be an option looked at by the local hierarchy next year, but they were comfortable with the current format.
League doesn’t let up this weekend at Marley Brown Oval, with the CQ Comets taking on South Logan on Saturday night.
