Favourites fare poorly in Slipper barrier draw

The Golden Slipper has been blown wide open with favourite Houtzen and second elect She Will Reign both drawing double digit barriers.

Houtzen has drawn 16 but will jump from 14 if the emergencies don't run, and She Will Reign (drew 13) is likely to start from barrier 11 in the 16-horse field.

Pariah (barrier four) and Catchy (gate eight) drew best of the main chances, and Single Bullet (three), Trapeze Artist (five) and Diamond Tathagata (seven) also fared well.

Houtzen drifted from $4 to $4.40 after the draw, while She Will Reign remained rock solid at $5 with TAB.

Catchy remained a $7 chance, and Pariah firmed in one point to $8.

Menari firmed from $26 to $21 after drawing barrier one.

Houtzen came from a wide barrier to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January and the Queensland filly will have to do it again in the Slipper.

"It's nothing new," trainer Toby Edmonds said.

"She knows where she goes and she just heads to the outside barrier and it's up to (jockey) Jeff (Lloyd) now."

Gary Portelli was philosophical about She Will Reign's draw and said 11 was his lucky number.
