Favourable conditions bring jellyfish to Tannum beach

A NUMBER of jellyfish washed up on Tannum Sands main beach on Tuesday.

Catostylus jellyfish don't usually frequent local waters in large numbers, but have been known to wash up here when conditions are favourable or after northerly winds.

Most stings only require treatment with water and ice.

However, stings from irukandji and box jellyfish require vinegar and immediate medical assistance.

To avoid danger remember to always swim between the red and yellow flags, look for and obey safety signs and do not enter the water when beaches are closed.
