‘Pools of blood’: Hero rescues girl from crash carnage

Garry Brennan was ordering a late lunch, on his way to drop off his daughter's ballet shoes, when he heard an almighty screech and bang.

Without thinking he reacted - running across the carpark and over the road towards a car wrapped around a traffic light pole.

It was Wednesday afternoon, at the intersection of Anzac Ave and Wattle Rd, at Rothwell north of Brisbane.

The first thing he remembers hearing is the "screeching and a bang".

"The car was around the pole, I could hear screaming and there was blood dripping out the car," Mr Brennan said.

As the Morayfield father used all his strength to pry the mangled door open, he never expected to see so many children in the car.

"There were kids everywhere," Mr Brennan said.

"There was pools of blood.

"I could see the (front passenger) was dead.

"There were girls stuck in the back, they were screaming 'help', 'help', 'help'.

"It was like nothing I had ever seen before."

Mr Brennan managed to free the legs of one young girl who trapped by the seat.

"I pulled her out and took her up on the hill and sat with her," Mr Brennan said.

"More and more kids just kept coming out of the car.

"It felt like ages, I don't think it was, but it felt like it, before the ambulance arrived.

"The girl just kept saying 'don't leave'.

Mr Brennan said by this point other motorists had come to help.

After talking to emergency services and the young girl being seen too Mr Brennan walked back across the road to deliver his daughter her ballet shoes.

"I still had blood on my shorts," he said.

Mr Brennan then started to realise how shaken up he was.

"I've got two kids myself, I never stopped to think that something could have happened to me while I was helping," he said.

"I was a wreck, I couldn't sleep, had nightmares and images - they will scar me for life."

Mr Brennan took a day off work, sought professional help from a counselling service and was make at work today.

He has spoken to other motorists who stopped to help.

"It helped to talk to someone that was there," Mr Brennan said.

Police have since charged the 14-year-old driver of the car, which was allegedly stolen. A 10-year-old girl, who was also in the car, has also been charged.
