Fatality on highway

ONE man is dead and another four people seriously injured in a fatal, two-vehicle accident on the Bruce Highway yesterday.

The accident occurred around 3.30pm at the intersection of Sinclair Street and the Bruce Highway at Ambrose.

One man was declared deceased at the scene and two women and two boys aged six and four injured.

The deceased man was driving a Mazda sedan with a female passenger, while a woman was driving a Toyota Landcruiser and carrying two children on board.

Some of the victims were trapped in the Landcruiser and had to be cut free.

The Observer understands the Mazda was heading south on the highway, and the Landcruiser was heading north.

One woman and the two children were taken to Rockhampton Base Hospital by ambulance and the other woman was airlifted by helicopter to hospital.

Several QAS vehicles and paramedics attended the scene, along with QFRS personnel and police.

The road was closed for several hours and traffic was diverted around the accident scene.

A nearby worker at a site about half a kilometre away said the collision sounded like a lot of tyres popping.

He and workmates went to the scene of the accident, and he crowbarred open the bonnet of the Landcruiser and set the fire extinguisher over the smoking motor.
