The faster you drive, the harder you hit: Police

SPEEDING is not just about driving faster than the speed limit, it is about driving too fast for the conditions.

Should you really be driving at 100km/h with the sun in your eyes?

After travelling at a higher speed for a period of time, when you slow down it can be harder to judge your speed - check your speedometer.

The faster you go, the longer it takes to react and the longer braking distance you need to stop.

The severity of injuries resulting from a crash, regardless of the cause, is directly related to the pre-crash speed.

Put simply the faster you drive the harder you hit.

There are three collisions that occur when a vehicle crashes:

  1. The vehicle collides with an object eg tree or another vehicle.
  2. The human collision inside the vehicle - when the vehicle stops the occupants continue to move forward until they contact some part of the vehicle.
  3. Internal collision of the organs within the human body - even after the occupant stops within the vehicle their organs continue to move until they collide with other organs or bones.

Even small decreases in speed can reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes on our roads.

Police are calling on all drivers to say no to speeding.
