Fast food outlets get a golden tick from council to open
GLADSTONE is fast becoming the region's fast food mecca, with McDonald's set to open a new store in Calliope later this year.
The Golden Arches will open a small store in the new Travel Centre on the Dawson Hwy, near the Calliope Crossroads.
It comes as Gladstone Regional Council approved a development application for a new McDonald's store at Kirkwood Rd last November.
Construction on the Boyne Island McDonald's is also nearing completion; with store licensee Nathan Patrick hoping it will be open by October.
"It's nearly built; we have McDonald's posters around the construction site," Mr Patrick said.
"Gladstone is always growing and the more stores we get, the better it is for the community."
While the rumour mill has been in overdrive about what retailers will reside in the new Travel Centre, Gladstone Regional Council was quick to set the record straight.
"To the planning section's knowledge, there is no DA lodged or approved explicitly for a Nando's restaurant," Mayor Gail Sellers said.
A McDonald's Australia spokesperson said licensees had not been appointed to the Calliope or Kirkwood restaurants as yet.
"While we expect to open the Calliope and Boyne Island restaurants later this year, we do not expect that Kirkwood Rd will be completed until 2014," the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the Calliope store would be a smaller restaurant and would not take long for construction to be completed.
Cr Sellers said she did not know the fuel provider that would operate out of the Travel Centre.
