Farmers Federation wants McVeigh to answer questions

A STATE agriculture plan has been given a cold reception by Queensland's top farming body for not giving the industry enough to work with.

The discussion paper - Queensland's Agriculture Strategy: A 2040 vision to double the value of production - is just 16 pages long, which gives background, reiterates election promises and poses questions on agricultural policy.

The Queensland Farmers Federation believes it is time for Agriculture Minister John McVeigh to work on answers to those questions.

QFF chief executive Dan Galligan said the group backed a plan to double the value of food production, but said it would not happen easily.

"It is worth remembering that agricultural industries are under pressure on a number of fronts, which means that a doubling of production won't simply occur on its own and without supportive policy intervention," Mr Galligan said.

The government did well to concede it should only intervene where it would be helpful, but Mr Galligan said, "much more will be required beyond what is outlined in the discussion paper if we are to see this process move to a truly collaborative and strategic action plan, beyond just more analysis".

The QFF will now put together a detailed response to the discussion paper.

Mr Galligan said the QFF would work with Mr McVeigh on the target of building the value of the industry.

The Minister's office was not able to provide a response before deadline on Wednesday.
