VIDEO: Family's $10K a year bill to treat daughter

WITH a smile as bright as the sun, and an infectious laugh, at a glance you would not know little Zoey has a debilitating illness.

The four-year-old has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, which affects her ability to walk and speak and carry out basic actions.

With her parents having to spend up to $10,000 a year on their daughter on specialist appointments, travel time and facilities it's a day-to-day struggle for the family.

But for the past three years close family friend Brad Harris has organised A Ride For Zoey, which sees hundreds of residents participate in a two-day event that raises money for the family.

Last year the event raised $15,000 and attracted 500 residents. The funds raised went towards a much-needed wheelchair and walking frame for Zoey.

"And most of the time to get that help, which is expensive, they have to travel.

"I just thought that it would be a great way to help out while having a bit of fun at the same time."

The weekend event this year, on October 1 and 2, will take place on Donaldson Rd, Foreshores, Turkey Beach, with a camp out.

A Ride For Zoey is a motorbike trail ride, open to all, and for those who don't ride a motorbike there will also be lots of activities, live entertainment, music, food, electronic bull, a jumping castle and more.

Residents are invited to camp out at the site for the weekend.

Zoey's mother Hayley said that thanks to the donations the family was able to afford facilities and treatment that resulted in Zoey quickly progressing.

"This year she went to a mainstream kindergarten and will repeat it again before going to prep in 2018," Hayley said.

"It's overwhelming the amount of support we have received from the community to get Zoey where she is today.

"My husband, Josh, and I are both working, him full time, and myself doing filler work at night, so we take turns throughout the day looking after Zoey.

"At the moment it's very difficult with money and just like everyone else we have bills and things to pay outside of Zoey's treatment.
