Home schooling option passes the test with teen

FOR most year 11 students, the end of school means going away with their family and hanging out with friends.

But for home school student Jay Lanzon, finishing year 11 this year was just like every other day.

"The concept of holidays is so different when you are home schooled," he said.

"For most kids, holidays is about spending time with their family, but I get to do that every day.

"Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely excited to finish year 11 and I'll get to do a lot more scootering with my friends, but it's a totally different mentality."

Jay is the second of five children, all who have been home schooled by their mum Katrina Lanzon.

"Alaina graduated year 12 last year and has been working as a nanny," said Jay.

"I love hanging out with her. We always watch Tthe Mentalist and then do a Maccas run in the middle of it."

"It's the best."

Katrina said she started home schooling Alaina and Jay when they moved to Calliope, and it worked straight away.

"It's not about saying home school is the only way, and we are lucky we can make it work on one wage," she said.

"But this is the choice we have made and it works for us, with the kids as proof."

She said Jay went to a state school for six months and tried a technical college, but didn't like it.

"He's just not a school-type kid," she said.

"He's one of those kids that loves trades and because our schedule is flexible, we've been able to get him working a few days a week at Aurizon to help him get into it."

Jay agrees and said being at home hanging out with Alaina and watching his three younger sisters grow up was amazing.

"In my mind, I'm finishing year 11 and hopefully will have an apprenticeship as an electrical fitter/mechanic next year.

"I'd rather be working than studying, and I'd rather be hanging out with my family all the time, than only just during the holidays."
