Familiar face returns to BITS FC

SOCCER: BITS Sharks Football Club has gone back to the future with the appointment of Grant Nicolson as Division 1 Men's coach this season.

Involved with the Boyne Island club since the early 1990s, the stalwart will guide the men's side in 2018 after taking the Division 1 Women's side to a grand final last season.

The Sharks lost 2-1 to Central in the Gladstone Division 1 decider last season but with last year's premiers moving up to the CQ Premier League, a window of opportunity looms for the BITS boys.

As is the case almost every season, player turnover remains an issue for BITS.

Last season's leading goal scorer Dom Stockdale has moved to Perth, captain Kane Leslie to the Northern Territory, while a small handful have decided to play AFL.

"We've lost a few key players from last year. Predominately a lot of our players work at the smelter so people come and go all the time and it's been that way ever since I've been there," Nicolson said.

"It's really hard to have the same team consistently.

"We lost some and we'll have some new players this year, but the main aim for us is just to be competitive."

Former Men's Division 1 coach Paul Blomfield said he was looking forward to taking a backwards step this year.

He's also backing Nicolson to bring the best out of the men as he did with the women in 2017.

"I'm looking forward to just rolling up and having a run," Blomfield said.

"He's an experienced coach and coached teams through finals, won finals and premierships and that will bode well for the guys this year.

"It's quite a young squad this year and he's the kind of guy who can get a lot out of a player and get them playing to their potential."

Meanwhile, Ebony Yasso will coach the women's Division 1 team this season.

Yasso played 10 games in 2017, scoring one goal.
