Facebook comments end in bashing attack

A TANNYMOREL man who bashed another man near-unconscious in his own home has been the second person to be handed a jail sentence for such offences in the past fortnight.

Jake Daniel Osborn entered the Killarney home of a man known to him and the pair became involved in an argument about comments the other man had made on Facebook about Osborn's girlfriend.

The Warwick Magistrates Court yesterday heard the 24-year-old punched the other man twice in the head and both men then fought in both the lounge room and then kitchen.

The victim was left in a "semi-conscious" state when Osborn left the house.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey said he would not tolerate such violence and said jail was the only option.

"As I have said before I have only been here four months or so and I am concerned by the number of assaults in the community," he said.

"This is the second one in two weeks involving assaults in a person's residence.

"I have been consistent in my approach and just hope the message will get out in the community."

Defence solicitor Bonnie O'Brien told the court her client had since made amends with the victim and the two had not had any conflict since.

Ms O'Brien asked Mr Manthey to spare her client jail.

Mr Manthey noted the young man had no history of violent offending and had only been charged with common assault and not the more serious assault occasioning bodily harm.

He said those factors had convinced him that Osborn should not serve actual time.

The young man was sentenced to six months jail, wholly suspended for 18 months.
