Extra day of action for famous surf event
SURFING: Surfing lovers, please keep the dates from March 1-4 in your diaries.
That's because the best surfers from various parts of Australia will converge on the pristine beach at 1770 for the Reef 2 Beach Longboard Classic 20th Anniversary.
Contest director and competitor Paul White said it will be an action-packed four days with a touch of nostalgia.
"It will see the return of the Show n Shine where old pre-1966 longboards will be on display with the best surfboard winning a prize," he said.
"There will be also some other Queensland and Australian longboard titles surfers entering the event as well, so it's going to be a cracker of a surf comp for the 20th."
The first day of competition on Thursday, March 1, will comprise of surfers from north of Fraser Island.
"On Friday the 2nd, we will see traditional-style surfing with the logger division...that's old school longboarding, as well the SUP division which is stand up paddling," White said.
Day three will see surfing action for all age divisions to over 60 year's of age in the longboard category.
With nearly 100 surfers already registered, White expects there will be more to compete as the date draws closer with prize-money sure to lure more surfers.
"We have lots from the Sunshine Coast and as far south as Sydney, but we will get a lot more from other areas closer to the start date," he said.
The pinnacle of the event will be the final day.
"Sunday will be finals day with the big prize of $500 donated by Blue Mantis training systems to go to the winner of the open nine-foot division which is the main division of the whole competition," White said.
Among the competitors will be Damian Coulter who is last year's over-40 Australian longboard champion.
"Damian has competed in this competition in the past and also winning the open back 10 years ago," White said.
The Reef 2 Beach Longboard Classic is sponsored by PRD Nationwide Realestate Agnes Water and hosted by the Tide n Turn Boardriders Club.
