RC Hobby House to open on Auckland St today
RORY Birch is set to open his hobby house on Auckland St in Gladstone today.
Rory's RC Hobby House has been selling remote control cars, boats, planes and drones in Rockhampton for six years and is now expanding to Gladstone.
The electrician by trade is a remote control plane enthusiast, and started doing repairs and selling parts out of his car nine years ago.
"I don't get to fly much with the hobby clubs anymore but I do enjoy helping other people with their hobbies," he said.
But he said it wouldn't be the remote control clubs in Gladstone that would make his business viable.
"It's the mums and dads that will make us viable," he said.
"The clubs will come for fuel and repairs but we won't be able to rely on them."
He said since Toy World closed down in Gladstone he had noticed more people driving to Rockhampton for remote control cars, planes and boats.
The prices range from about $900 for a good basic aircraft to $200 for a "splash and go" aircraft.
"It can get as expensive as $800 for a chassis of a car.
"But it was a case of move to the people because a lot of people don't make the trip to Rocky."
He decided to expand the business and open up his second store down the Bruce Hwy in Gladstone which he said was a risk.
"I'm investing quite a bit," he said.
"While the economic environment is down we thought we would make a go for it."
He said the new shop would employ at least two staff members with Rory.
Rory will live in Gladstone and run the business while his wife Cathy will run the business in Rockhampton.
To cater for the workers in Gladstone the shop will be open from 11am-7pm Monday to Friday and 11am-4pm on Saturday.
