Ex-president George HW Bush taken to hospital

FORMER US president George HW Bush has been taken to hospital with a shortness of breath, a spokesman from his office says.

Mr Bush, who is 90, was taken by ambulance to the Houston Methodist Hospital late Tuesday (local time) as a precaution, and "will be held for observation, again as a precaution", the spokesman said.

Mr Bush, who took office in 1989 and served one term in the White House, spent seven weeks in hospital in 2013 for treatment of bronchitis and related ailments.

The former president celebrated his 90th birthday in June by going skydiving.
