Event gets up and running

GLADSTONE pavements will be pounded on Sunday August 22, when thousands of locals and a few visitors run the Ports Corporation’s Botanic to Bridge.

The inaugural event includes two courses, an 8km event starting at the Tondoon Botanical Gardens and a 3km event commencing at Reg Tanna Memorial Park. The finish line for both courses is the picturesque Gladstone Marina parklands.

Organisers are calling for people to register their interest, with registration opening today.

Local primary and secondary schools are set to benefit from GPC’s Botanic to Bridge event with an estimated $50,000 from registrations going back to the schools.

In addition to this, GPC will donate $500 to schools for every 100 registrations received per school, with the funds to be used for healthy living initiatives.

CEO Leo Zussino said the school incentive program would provide the next generation with the information needed to improve their health and fitness.

“By donating the proceeds from student registrations to local schools, the schools can implement healthy living programs to assist students to develop healthy living habits that will guide them for the rest of their lives,” he said.

School students can enter in either the 8km event or the 3km event to be eligible for the school incentive program.

“With $20,000 worth of cash prizes, there will be something for the serious runners and walkers, as well as prizes for participating,” Mr Zussino added.

The Observer will follow the Fleetwood family over the next month during preparations.
