Animal lovers stage protest against cruelty

DOGS have been beaten, starved and abused in Gladstone and Friends of the RSPCA president Judy Whicker has had enough.

She has organised a protest against animal cruelty that will take place at Gladstone Magistrates Court today from 9am.

"It's going to be a peaceful assembly and we'll be calling for stiffer penalties for animal cruelty," Mrs Whicker said.

She said residents should report their neighbours if they think animals are being abused.

"If you're not happy with the way your neighbours are treating their animals, ring 1300 ANIMAL," she said.

"It's completely anonymous and even if it turns out that it's not happening, it's best to report anyway.

"Animals are like babies, they're completely dependent on their owners."

The issue of animal abuse came to light recently when two huskies were allegedly left on the brink of death by their owner.
