WHAT YOU SAID: Supermarket savings ahead of closure
ONE OF Gladstone's cheapest supermarkets is closing - as soon as the last items of stock is gone from the shelves.
U-Save Supermarket, which used to be an IGA in the Gladstone Central Shopping Centre along Dawson Hwy, has had a treasure trove of bargains for shoppers over the past few days.
Six jobs are due to go in the closure although staff say they haven't been officially notified yet. Rumours are that craft and haberdashery store Spotlight will take the supermarket's place, but centre management would not confirm the new tenants.
GCSC property manager Michelle Hawkins was able to say that new tenants would be opening up around September.
Long-time customer Elayna Ward said it was a shame the supermarket was closing down.
"It had better prices than anywhere else," she said.
"I only did my shopping here. I felt like I was supporting the locals and the staff are nice.
"I hope they get re-employed in Gladstone."
Ms Ward said she had shopped at the supermarket for eight years, and wasn't sure where she would be going to get her groceries now.
Customer Glenice Allwood agreed, saying the bigger supermarkets had priced pensioners out.
