‘I was supposed to give birth tomorrow’

EM RUSCIANO will take a two-day break from her 2Day FM breakfast radio show, telling listeners that this Thursday would have been her due date to give birth.

"I was supposed to give birth tomorrow. And I wasn't really sure, and this was another thing, when you lose a baby - and I lost my baby at 14 weeks - no-one really tells you what to do when the due date comes around," she explained during Wednesday morning's broadcast.

The 38-year-old mum-of-two revealed in May she had suffered a miscarriage just a few days shy of 13 weeks.

Rusciano explained to listeners she wasn't sure how to deal with tomorrow - which would have been her due date - because there's "no manual" for women to follow in this situation.

"I was just going to try and power through it and then it's been looming on the horizon like a dark cloud," she said. "And I didn't think I could probably get on air and do three hours. I don't know what to do with myself. I just don't feel like being funny. It's really hard. This whole week's been really hard."

While the performer said she doesn't know what she should do over the coming days, she said she will be joined at home by a friend with a bottle of gin to watch the new Barbara Streisand Netflix special.

After revealing the sad news in May, Rusciano shared with her Facebook followers her and partner Scott Barrow had named the baby Ray.

During Wednesday's broadcast, the host added: "He's in a plant in my front yard, so I'm going to hang out around the plant. I mean it's weird and sad, but I think it's really important I keep talking about it - and I don't want to."

One in four pregnant women will experience a miscarriage, according to the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. A miscarriage refers to the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks.

It's believed those rates could even be higher, because many women either don't realise they are pregnant or are ashamed and suffer in silence.

Rusciano reflected on these statistics, saying: " ... Women carry this pain around in them and in their heart and this gaping hole.

"But we're expected just to power on and get over it. And that's been said to me a few times - 'just get over it' -- but you don't get to tell people how to process grief.

" ... I'm just going to do as I always say and get up tomorrow and put one foot in front of the other and get to the end of the day - look, probably crying and drinking gin and singing Barbra Streisand."

Comedian Celeste Barber will join Rusciano's co-host Harley Breen during Thursday and Friday's broadcast.
