‘They thought I’d had a boob job at 12’

SHE will be the star of the swim runway at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, but Brisbane model Ellie Gonsalves once hated her figure and burst into tears when she tried on her first bikini.

The 27-year-old actor said as a tomboy growing up in Brisbane, she struggled with her curvy body shape, including suggestions that at 12 years old she'd had breast enhancement.

"I definitely struggled with my body growing up," said Gonsalves, who loved riding horses and playing sport.

"I was in this change room in a swimwear store when I was 12 and I was such a tomboy so this was killing me at the time. I can remember how scared I was to flaunt how I looked.

"This girl comes in and says 'oh my god where did you get your boobs done?' and I literally burst into tears."

Gonsalves turned her body confidence issues into a successful modelling and acting career including a Guess campaign, a Superbowl ad and a role in upcoming movie Fighting With My Family with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Today, she will make her MBFWA debut when she opens and closes the swim runway show for brand Fella at Sydney's Olympic Park pool. The show will embrace model diversity with Brisbane plus-sized model Bree Warren also taking part.
