Gas leak and electrical fire make for a busy day

A GAS leak and electrical fire forced the evacuation of two Ipswich sites on a busy afternoon for emergency services.

Fire crews and police rushed to Ipswich Hospital and to the Bunnings Warehouse construction site at West Ipswich at 2.30pm.

Alarms were raised in the Ipswich Hospital's medical imagery room on Chelmsford Ave set off fire alarms forcing the hospital into lockdown.

Around 30 patients and staff were evacuated and waited near the hospital's new East St entrance to be given the all clear.

Three fire crews arrived at the hospital and police cordoned off the entrance as the cause of the alarm activation was identified.

The hospital's emergency department and level four were evacuated after smoke was detected emanating from an electrical board.

Fire fighters entered the hospital wearing breathing apparatus to investigate the cause of the fire.

The site was left in the hands of an electrician.

An Ipswich Hospital spokesperson said all patients were checked and cleared by medical staff.

At the same time only a few blocks away, workers at the Bunnings Warehouse construction site in West Ipswich were momentarily evacuated after a contractor accidentally hit a gas branch with a Bobcat.

The gas leak occurred about 2.40pm at the site in West Ipswich.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene and remained there until the situation was safely resolved.
