Education expert says 40-year-olds should go back to school
WORKERS should expect to return to university in their 40s in order to stay relevant and successful throughout their career, a global education expert has warned.
And Australians should start saving now because in the future it will be up to them to fund their career development, says Nick van Dam, head of learning at leading consulting firm Deloitte.
"If you are currently in your early 40s you are mid-career - my view is you need to go back to school mid career to ensure you can work for another 20 years," said Dr van Dam.
"What I recommend to people is to start saving during your life and put some money aside so you can take time in the middle of your career and get another degree - a master degree, MBA or special training."
Dr van Dam, who has written a number of books about learning and human resources development, said there has been a shift towards making knowledge workers - such as IT workers, lawyers, teachers - more responsible for their careers and skill development, with many organisations investing less in training.
