Eccles earns jiu jitsu gold

GLADSTONE Martial Arts Academy Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) student and assistant coach Stefan Eccles came away with a swag of medals at the AFBJJ Pan Pacific Grappling Tournament which was held in Melbourne on Saturday.

Eccles, who has been training for just over three years in the ground fighting martial art of BJJ, walked away with a gold medal in both of his weight categories in the “gi” and “no-gi” divisions as well as a silver in the absolute (open weight) “gi” division and a bronze medal in the absolute “no-gi” division.

The tournament on the weekend proved just how fast BJJ is growing in Australia as a martial art with just under 1000 competitors vying for medals in different divisions.

Eccles, who also won gold at last year’s event, said “the event was massive with people from all over the South Pacific, so I am really happy to come away with such good results.”

On top of Eccles’ personal result, the Fight Club Jiu Jitsu team of which the Gladstone Martial Arts Academy (GMAA) is part, came away with second place overall despite only having 35 competitors in the massive competition. GMAA head coach Rob McIntyre said, “this just proves how good our head coach Daniel Lima really is and I am confident that under him, we will produce many more Gladstone gold medallists in the future.”

Brazilian jiu jitsu classes are held at the Gladstone Martial Arts Academy on Goondoon St every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6pm and Friday afternoon at 4pm for children.
