Easter bonnets bonanza

COLOURFUL headwear was all the rage at Tannum Sands Kindergarten on Friday.

The place was buzzing with excitement as kids and parents participated in an Easter bonnet parade.

“It was terrific,” Melissa de Koning, the kindergarten’s co-director, said.

“It was a really nice way to celebrate the end of term.”

In a fine display of imaginative craftsmanship, more than 22 kids made bonnets for themselves and their parents in readiness for the big parade.

Ms de Koning said every child had a family member go along, underlining the strong community support for the kindergarten.

The concept began when some fire fighters came to visit the kids recently, and they noticed their striking hats.

It got them talking about the wonders of headwear and once they learned about the tradition of the Easter bonnet, it all fell into place.

The children worked on their bonnets at home with their parents.

“We could tell that the children had been encouraged to do most of the work themselves,” Ms de Koning said.

“It was great.”

After their grand parade, the children performed a sun dance to celebrate the occasion.
