Drunk man tried to break into property to get smokes

A DRUNK offender who tried to break into a New Auckland property was just trying to get some cigarettes, he told police.

The man approached the property in Willow St from the front, jumped a side gate and positioned a bin underneath a window.

He then climbed up on the bin and broke a side window.

The man reached a hand into the window before police called out to him to stop.

The offender jumped down from the bin before being arrested by officers.

Police said the man had been extremely intoxicated, and told them he wanted to get some cigarettes from the property.
