A SUNSHINE Coast police dog is recovering from deep cuts after being viciously attacked by two American staffies while taking part in a drug raid.

DJ, one of the newest dogs on the beat, was one of a three-dog crew assisting in the execution of a search warrant at a Mooloolaba home on Wednesday night.

Police allege two dogs living at the Pettigrew St property with their owner, latched on to the chocolate and black german shepherd at the front door.

Officers were forced to use capsicum spray to prise the dogs off DJ.

"DJ has sizable lacerations to the leg and elbow. The dogs went for the chest initially, but then just latched on to whatever they could," Sunshine Coast Squad officer-in-charge Craig Law said.

"We have done hundreds of these raid type jobs and we do take into account other dogs being at the property, but when a dog brushes past an owner and rushes in to attack, our dogs don't stand a chance to react.

"What if it was someone at the door selling chocolates and the dogs come?"

The matter has been reported to the council and officers have launched an investigation.

If the dogs are deemed dangerous, the owner could face higher registration fees and could be required to display warning signage and comply with other council restrictions.

A 27-year-old man was charged with possession of dangerous drugs as a result of the search warrant.
