Driver with kids in car in road rage ramming

AN IPSWICH dad was driving his two young daughters when he deliberately rammed his car into another vehicle.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court last week, the driver Steve Allan Czernia pleaded guilty to a dangerous operation of vehicle charge.

The court was told the 37-year-old intentionally caused the crash in an apparent revenge attack.

Before he got behind the wheel, Czernia had been involved in a heated argument with a woman outside a shopping centre in North Booval.

The dispute escalated when the woman punched Czernia in the eye and kicked his car door.

The father of two retaliated by ploughing his car into the woman's vehicle, twice.

His daughters aged 11 and 12 years were passengers in the car at the time of the crash.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess said Czernia must have had a "brain snap" to have behaved so recklessly.

Ms Sturgess told Czernia his behaviour that day had posed a grave risk to his children, the victim and bystanders in the area.

"I hope you are embarrassed and ashamed that you subjected your own daughters to seeing you behave in this manner," she said.

"It's a serious matter to be using your vehicle as a weapon. It can cause great damage not only to property but to life and limb."

Defence lawyer Justin Thomas said Czernia had no criminal history and had lost his job as a result of the incident.

Mr Thomas said his client's decision to crash the car was an act of "sheer frustration", as a consequence of the altercation with the victim.

He said Czernia had not driven his vehicle at great speed when he collided with the other car.

The offence took place on June 14, last year.

Czernia was given 120 hours of community service to be completed within 12 months.

He was also ordered to pay $4500 in restitution for the damaged he caused to the victim's vehicle. No convictions were recorded.
