Driver safe and well out of burning sulphur truck

UPDATE 2.15PM:

THE owner of the truck has confirmed that only one person, the driver was inside at the time of the incident.

She also said emergency services were still dealing with the incident and she was relieved that the driver wasn't injured.

A Newcastle Fire Communications spokesperson said the Alstonville Fire and Rescue NSW had also been called to the scene.

 

UPDATE 1.55PM:

A NSW Fire Communications spokesperson confirmed a truck carrying eight tonnes of sulphur that caught alight on Sextonville Rd, north of Casino, is still ablaze.

Fumes from the fire have affected fire fighters, causing crews to relocate.

Fire fighters are currently dousing the truck with foam to try to extinguish the fire.

One fire fighter is reportedly suffering heat exhaustion.

Crews at the scene have called for the Fire and Rescue NSW Kyogle brigade to assist.

INITIAL: EMERGENCY services are at the scene of a truck carrying sulphur which caught fire on Sextonville Road, north of Casino.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Lismore, Kyogle and Casino and Rural Fire Service teams from Sextonville and Casino are on the scene.

It's believed emergency services have the fire under control and nearly extinguished.

A Newcastle fire communications spokesperson confirmed the truck, which was carrying eight tonnes of sulphur, had spilled half it's load.

The sulphur surrounding the truck has now caught fire and the Goonellabah Hazmat Unit is on it's way to the scene.

There were three people on board the truck at the time.
