Driver charged after fleeing police, caught with shot gun

WITH guns in his car and ammunition in his pocket, police say a 26-year-old driver fled from New South Wales officers near Tweed Heads.

The driver refused to stop for police at the Kennedy Drive on-ramp to the Pacific Motorway.

The two-state chase ended with the male driver crashing his car in Tugun, having crossed the state border on the Gold Coast.

Police searched his car after the crash, and allege that the shot gun was found behind one of the front seats and the rifle discovered in the boot.

The man was also taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.

He is to front Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with weapons and explosive offences -- the shot gun and air rifle ammo count as explosives -- and driving unlicensed.
