Dreams become reality for Bundy scholarship recipient
Determined and passionate about using her voice to help others, a Bundaberg university student is pursuing her dream of becoming a journalist after receiving a special scholarship.
Tertiary student Billie Hughes is studying a Bachelor of Arts at CQUniversity and is now one step closer to achieving her career goals after she was named recipient of the 2021 Jenny Simpson Memorial Scholarship.
Named after the late Jenny Simpson, the scholarship honours the inspiring CQUniversity teacher who championed the Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) course.
"Like Jenny Simpson my passion and drive lead me to where I need to be in life … with such support I will be able to study with ease and achieve my goal of becoming a journalist," Billie said.
"Thank you for believing in me - I am honoured to be receiving the Jenny Simpson Memorial Scholarship in 2021."
Valued at $2000 the scholarship funds assist students who have graduated from the STEPS program as they progress into an undergraduate degree at the university.
Upon completing the STEPS course last year the Bundy local then enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in journalism and geography.
"I love to write and have a large passion for the environment so I have decided to major in both journalism and geography," Billie said.
"My goal is to give a voice to those who need it most - whether that be human or animal I believe I can achieve that goal through journalism."
But Billie's hard work and contributions don't stop there.
When the local university student isn't busy studying she is working her travel blog - The Wild Travel Chic which supports solo travellers trekking across the globe.
Billie has also volunteered 1900 hours of her time at Bundaberg's Alexandra Park Zoo over the last three and a half years.
She has also volunteered at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane and completed work experience at Sydney's Taronga Park Zoo.
The scholarship celebrates the life and legacy of Jenny who helped to empower adult learners to change their life and achieve their full potential.
Dedicating 15 years of her life to teaching about 1000 students at CQUniversity Jenny lived by the quote 'I think therefore I am, I imagine therefore I can be more' and instilled its value into her students.
CQUniversity thanks Jenny's family, friends and colleagues who have made the scholarship possible through the CQUniCares Student Success Fund.
