Double gold for Gladstone girls in athletics campaigns

SALLY Hodgson and Sophie Duff have returned from their respective athletics campaigns with gold medals.

Sally, 18, competed in the QLD Secondary School State Championships in Brisbane where she excelled in the 400m hurdles by beating a quality field.

"Sally's one of our older athletes and is one of our most consistent trainers," Gladstone Athletics president John Sherriff said of the talented athlete.

"She went through Little Athletics and her form has continued through high school level," Sherriff said.

Sally's journey could lead her to a pathway to bigger things according to her father Warren.

"She will now be competing in the QLD athletics events now and most of these are down south and we are just looking at the Queensland Athletics calendar now to see what is on," Warren said.

It's a busy time for Sally who is also completing her Year 12 exams.

Sophie struck gold in the 12-girls long jump in the Primary School State Championships in Townsville.

"Sophie's one of our up and coming athletes and she is also very consistent," Sherriff said.

Sophie's mother Donna said Sophie seized her moment at the last opportunity and won by the narrowest of margins.

"It's her first gold medal and on her last jump where she won by just one centimetre," she said.

"Long jump is her focus as well as sprinting."

Sophie also will represent the QLD touch football side which is headed to Adelaide in two weeks to compete in the National Championships while another athletics campaign beckons in Canberra next month

Sherriff said: "Both are talented kids and work very hard."

Contact Sherriff on 0429 055 224 or via the club's Facebook site for details about Gladstone Athletics Club, which meets on Derby St on Saturday from 8.30am until 10.30am-11am.
