Rough and tumble as women contest epic roller derby scrim

EPIC doesn't even come close to describing the roller derby action in Gladstone last weekend.

About 60 roller derby players and referees from throughout Queensland travelled to Gladstone to compete in the Epic Scrim.

Gladstone Harbour City Hustlers coach Charlie Keenan said the five bouts over were intense but all in the name of fun.

"All the girls, not just Gladstone, did awesome this weekend," he said.

Keenan said non-skating official Rob Thomas, who organised the event, had done a great job

The girls are warming up for the forthcoming competition which starts in March.

"The girls are really keen to get in there and compete," Keenan said.

"They have been coming to training and nailing it."

And it was going to be a remarkable year for the Gladstone PCYC Roller Derby team, Keenan said .

He said the team's latest addition, Kiri McNaught, or Dirty Dancer as she's known, would be a player who made a difference.

"She has been working really hard since she joined," he said.

Home bout

  • Harbour City Hustler's next home game will be against Toowoomba on Saturday, March 2
  • The bout will be held at the PCYC
  • Doors open at 5pm bout starts 6.30pm
