Did 'Amazon-effect' close three Coast businesses in a week?
THE 'Amazon-effect' has changed the retail game for the foreseeable future.
Online shopping is simply more convenient and hassle-free.
But as the online world grows, the victims are the small businesses in retail who are forced out.
Two popular Sunshine Coast businesses - Sunshine Plaza's Flower Clothing and Mooloolaba's TLC Pet Food - both announced sudden closures last week.
This week Mountain Designs at Kawana revealed it was closing.
Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance president Michael Shadforth said the Amazon-effect had changed the retail sector all around the world.
While small retailers might see less customers through their doors, he said the online world could potentially create more jobs.
"In general, retail is finding it difficult, but the Sunshine Coast, because we are unique we are a bit better protected," Mr Shadforth said.
"Our location and lifestyle really help. And providing unique offerings and exceptional service really help.
"Visitors here have a really different mindset when on holidays or weekends, they come here and find interesting treasures and discover new things.
"People also spend more on themselves with personal services."
He said he knew of several Coast businesses that started online and supply warehouses throughout the world. He said that trend could continue.
"Amazon grow stocks and do it quicker than retail. They also can grow small businesses very effectively," he added.
"We have entrepreneurs whose products go all around the world. Bikini brands, jet skis, computer software, leisure toys...
"They could have started their own store but who knows if they would have done so well.
"We are seeing a change in tide but the Coast is well set up to handle it."
