Dial up a new reality with Samsung's VR headset

IF YOU think getting your teenager off the phone is difficult now, wait until they are immersed in Samsung's new virtual reality headset.

Your chances of getting their attention will be … well virtually zero.

Samsung's Gear VR Innovator Edition promises to bring a new way to experience mobile content - whether cinematic quality movies, gaming, 360 degree videos or especially made educational content.

Powered by technology developed by Oculus, the Gear VR is the trump card for Samsung's new Galaxy Note 4, which was announced last week, ahead of Apple's iPhone 6.

The Note 4 slips into the new headset to give users an experience, which is expected to turn heads, dazzle and perhaps even dizzy a few.

John Carmack, of Oculus, said his company's "deep technical partnership" with Samsung had enabled the creation of a headset with "world class resolution and performance, all on a completely mobile platform".

"At the heart of the technology is the 5.7 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display of the Galaxy Note 4, providing stunning and engaging visuals. Samsung says users can sit in the 'best seat of a theatre, can be on-stage of a performance with full 360 3D video, and can enjoy gaming like it's never been seen before'."

It says the headset, for which pricing and availability is still to be announced, is made of flexible cushioning and lightweight materials, making it comfortable to wear.

It is completely wireless, so users can be fully engaged in virtual worlds without being tethered to a computer.

The Note 4 phone is said to be classier than last year's model with its extra screen real estate meaning it's easier to use the phone with multiple windows open at the same time.

And like previous Note phones it has a stylus, called the S Pen.

This time around there are 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity to make it feel more like using a real pen. Made by Montblanc, the pen feels sumptuous in the hand and makes writing on the screen much more appealing.

The Note 4 also comes with three microphones to make calls sound better. Samsung also revealed a new curved screen Galaxy Note Edge.

It has a slightly smaller display (5.6 inches) but an additional thin screen shaped like a strip along the edge, at a 45 degree edge, like a slope from the screen to the side of the phone. The edge screen can also be used to display notifications along the strip when you're watching a movie on the main screen, say.

Samsung also showed off its recently announced smart watch (one that can even have a sim card in it) so that smart watches finally become standalone devices.
