Details about Gladstone Harbour inquiry due this week

FEDERAL Environment Minister Greg Hunt will this week reveal details of a major inquiry into the leaking of dredge spoil in Gladstone Harbour.

Brisbane Times reports the terms of reference for the upcoming independent inquiry into a failed bund wall will demand a "prompt turnaround" for the report.

On January 8, Mr Hunt ordered his department to investigate why Gladstone Ports Corporation approved changes to the bund wall in 2011, then on January 20, as further information emerged about why the contractor had used cost-saving measures in the wall's construction, Mr Hunt ordered a wide-ranging independent inquiry.

It's believed the inquiry will have strong investigative powers, allowing it to check why there were no regulatory checks and balances on the construction of the bund wall.

At the time, Mr Hunt said the terms of reference would be wide enough "to properly investigate the Gladstone Harbour dredging project, the failure of a wall designed to retain dredge spoils and the management of the port on the central Queensland coast".'
