Design a commemorative coin

CHILDREN around the country are being asked to design their own Australian coin commemorating the nation's servicemen and women, as part of a campaign led by a Sunshine Coast group.

The Royal Australian Mint on Tuesday announced it came on board with the SunnyKids campaign, to create the coin design competition.

While the coin won't actually be created, children who enter go in the running to win a top-notch digital tablet that the official coin designers use at the mint.

As part of the campaign, schools were being encouraged to read author Rupert McCall's poem Pledge of Remembrance to help inspire students, in the lead-up the Remembrance Day on Sunday.

Some 1480 schools and about 295,000 students have already signed up to participate in the design competition, to be held this Friday.

SunnyKids chief executive and Read2Remember campaign founder Chris Turner said he was thrilled to have an iconic national brand such as the mint on board as a sponsor.

"The Royal Australian Mint's involvement provides a lot of credibility for the Read2Remember program as well as much needed funds to ensure we can reach as many schools as possible across Australia," he said.

"The competition asks participants to create a coin design which reflects what Remembrance Day means to them.

"Designs are predicted to depict the characteristics of courage and resilience found within our servicemen and women and this is a perfect fit with the Read2Remember program."

The winner will be announced on the mint's website on December 7, with entries closing on November 16.
