DERBY DELIGHT

AUSSIE RULES: Gladstone Mudcrabs coach Mark Jensen says the last minor round match against Boyne Island-Tannum Sands Saints will be the perfect preparation for the AFL Capricornia finals.

The local 'derby' or 'showdown' is on Saturday, August 12 at BITS Oval and is one of three games between the two rivals throughout the season.

"I only really looked at the first half of the draw because we have been concentrating on getting the game-plan right,” Jensen said.

"But in the last game against BITS, the players go up an extra level and it's like a mini-final.

"It's the perfect chance (to prepare) if we are lucky enough to make finals.”

The Muddies open their account in an away fixture against Rockhampton Panthers on Saturday, April 22 and then play 2016 strugglers, Rocky Brothers.

Two home fixtures against Glenmore Lions and reigning premiers Yeppoon, follow for the Mudcrabs.

Win one or both of these and an enticing first cross-town game awaits at BITS on May 27.

Saints coach Alan Watkin said his team had prepared as best as could be, to build on their preliminary final result last season.

BITS play Rockhampton Brothers at home on April 21 in their first match before a tough assignment, and a great measure of where the team is at, when the Saints travel to reigning premiers Yeppoon.

"The draw looks good, but it's a long drawn out arrangement,” Watkin said.

"A lot of the leagues down in Brisbane start their season in early April.”

The round five BITS and Muddies match could possibly give the winner a chance to snare the coveted double-chance.

The three cross-town clashes will have extra spice as the Saints have signed four ex-Muddies players.

"Daniel Clay is signed and sealed and (we) also have Jack Byrne and Nathan Mafrici and Brodie Coles,” Watkin said.

Byrne and Coles play across half-back, Clay is a midfielder, as is Mafrici.
