Deputy Premier supports longer parliamentary term

DEPUTY Premier Jackie Trad flagged her support for longer Queensland parliamentary terms in at a luncheon focusing on economic development.

Ms Trad, who also holds the reins of the local government, planning, transport and trade portfolios, said any changes would need bipartisan support.

Business, government and industry leaders attended the Committee for Economic Development of Australia function to hear from Ms Trad, Queensland Echo Entertainment Group managing director Geoff Hogg, Suncorp Group chief economist Steven Milch, ABS statistician David Kalisch and CSIRO's Dr Stefan Hajkowicz.

After her speech, Ms Trad also told a Toowoomba Surat Basin Enterprise officer she supported an inland rail.

The worker told her freight was expected to double by 2030 and triple by 2050 in the region.

Ms Trad said the government had met with Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss to discuss the inland rail and ultimately the Federal Government needed to resolve some issues with the Australian Rail Track Corporation.

"There has been feasibility studies and budget allocation so really we are wanting to work with the Commonwealth to make it a reality," she said.

"We are the only state in the country to have more than 50% of state that lives outside the capital city.

"Queensland has more cities and towns with a population of more than 100,000 than any other jurisdiction in Australia.

"As we move towards a 'knowledge economy' these regional areas will become increasingly central to productivity and economic growth."
