Barney Point residents stay calm as deluge continues
STANDING on his front porch looking out at the teeming rain, Barney Point resident Dennis Morgan is calm.
"This amount of water is nothing," he said on Friday. "It happens every year."
Dennis and wife Jennie have lived in their Wood St home for 20 years.
Dennis said the flooding last November had been the worst.
"We always get a lot of rain and combined with a high tide, this whole area will flood," he said.
"I would have expected our street to be flooded because of the amount of rain we've had in the past two days."
"I think the council must have done something. When the bottom of Wood gets flooded that's when I get worried."
Jennie puts it simply.
"We're quite used to it," she said. "I'm not worried at the moment."
Jennie said they'd had water up to their front step before.
"Whatever we have in the shed always takes a bit of a caning," she said. "I won't be worried until it's up to the steps."
Dennis said the council had been working to improve water drainage in the area for years.
"Barney Point is known as a flood area," he said. "It's a well known fact here on Wood Street.
"We're keeping an eye on it but the water usually goes away as fast as it comes."
