Late Cyril Golding honoured with doctorate
CQUNIVERSITY has conferred a posthumous Doctorate of Engineering on the late Cyril Golding.
Affectionately known as "Mr Gladstone", as was his father, Mr Golding passed away in 2012.
His family was presented the award at the aptly named CQUniversity Cyril Golding Library on Friday, where Associate Vice-Chancellor Owen Nevin read the conferment.
Mr Golding was a pioneer in the resources sector, starting his business as a sole operator in 1942 that went on to employ 1000 people as one of the largest privately owned earthmoving fleets in the southern hemisphere.
It was sold after he retired in 2007.
Shirley Golding said the degree would have delighted her late husband.
Neil Golding said his father would have wondered what all the fuss was about.
"He would say, 'This is just me doing what I do and people seem to like it'," Neil said.
"This would be a very special honour and this would be held way up there because it's down the line of what he did everyday.
"He worked with lots of engineers, but he was not an engineer. He was an engineer in a lot of terms without the paperwork."
