Deal close for BHP and unions

AFTER two years of battling, BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance and three unions are reportedly close to agreement on a new enterprise agreement.

A series of strikes and court battles have punctuated the dispute, which began almost two years ago.

Now BMA and the trio of unions - the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union, Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and Electrical Trades Union - are working towards a final ballot on the agreement to be held by the end of the month.

Since announcing a ceasefire in July, both sides put a lid on their otherwise very public duelling, refusing to release any details unless endorsed by all sides.

The deal remains firmly in place, with each side declining to elaborate on a statement released by the CFMEU.
