Man killed was from Ipswich, truck driver out of hospital

POLICE have confirmed the 26-year-old man who died in a horrific head-on collision on the Bruce Hwy, just south of the Tannum Sands turnoff, on Wednesday night was from Booval, near Ipswich.

The crash, which happened at 5.30pm on Wednesday between Benaraby and Miriam Vale, closed the road for about six hours as emergency services worked at the site.

Police praised the bravery of a passing motorist who stopped to extinguish smoke coming from the crushed 4WD.

The vehicle had veered into the path of an oncoming semi-trailer, police said.

The 66-year-old semi-trailer driver, who was transporting a load from Gladstone to Sydney for Bilinga Beach Holdings, was taken to Gladstone Base Hospital after the crash for precautionary treatment.

He was discharged later Wednesday night.

Tannum Sands police warned that motorists could expect further delays at some point in the coming few days because heavy machinery would be called in to move the semi-trailer.
