Day for Daniel: Why we shouldn't just 'move on'

THE relentless 24 hour news cycle means we 'get over' stories a lot quicker than we used to.

The world of online news has meant that we can read so many stories about the same subject - from so many different sources.

So it's not surprising that there are some that are 'over' the story of Daniel Morcombe.

There are some that think his story has been given far more attention by the media.

What about all the other 'missing' people, they say.

The reality is that Daniel's story is not just about Daniel.

It's about all kids.

And it's about the courage and conviction of two parents who never gave up.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe, through the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, have ensured that Daniel's tragic death was not in vain.

Through the Daniel Morcombe Foundation we have far greater awareness of the issues of child safety, particularly here on the Sunshine Coast.

LATEST: DANIEL MORCOMBE'S CONVICTED KILLER GRANTED APPEAL HEARING

We are all more aware that there are thousands of child predators living in our communities. It's a scary fact but it's one we as parents can't afford to be naïve about.

We need to teach our kids. They need to know of Daniel's story.

The Morcombes continue to work tirelessly to promote the simple message to kids of recognise, react and report.

They continue to visit hundreds of schools, campaign for better laws, help other young victims of crime, and will soon see child safety become part of the national curriculum for all our kids.

Communities across Australia will tomorrow demonstrate support for the Morcombes by taking part in the Day for Daniel.

Like many on the Coast here, I will be joining those retracing the journey at Palmwoods that Daniel never got to make.

It's the 10th Walk for Daniel -and it's one we should all join - whether physically - or in spirit.

It's not just for Daniel. It's for all our kids.
