IT IS little wonder why expletives can be heard coming from the mouth of motorist Jeff Sullivan in a recording off his dash cam, but it's what this footage shows that is more horrifying.

The shocking footage shows Mr Sullivan swerving to avoid a woman in a mobility scooter who had crossed a very busy Takalvan St yesterday right in front of oncoming traffic.

"I could see a speck in the distance but then we got closer and saw it was someone in a wheelchair," he said.

Before he knew it, Mr Sullivan was forced to take evasive action to avoid hitting the seemingly oblivious woman.

"When she moved to the centre of the two lanes, I thought I had more room if I swerved to the left to dodge her," he said.

"This is the fourth time I've seen people on their electric scooters come out in front of me."

Mr Sullivan said the woman had crossed the street halfway between the major intersections of both Enterprise St and Walker St.

"I don't know what she was doing," he said.

"I don't know whether she could have gotten up onto the traffic island in the scooter."

The former truck driver said motorised scooters and wheelchairs should have flashing safety lights.

"That's an accident waiting to happen," he said.

"Someone is going to get seriously injured one day."

Bundaberg Police Traffic Branch Senior Constable Alan Sutton said as long as the woman's scooter was registered, she had a right to cross the road. "But she's got to do it safely," he said.

"If she can't negotiate crossing the road without impeding other vehicles, then she shouldn't."

Snr Const Sutton said the woman had just come from a stop sign.

"Stop signs require her to first stop and only proceed after giving way to all other vehicles," he said.

Bundaberg Police Inspector Kev Guteridge warned all road users to "drive for the unexpected".
