WELCOMING the New Year was extra special for local parents Kelly Fleiter and Daniel Liaw.

At 12.08pm Daniel Frederick Liaw was born in Gladstone Hospital, weighing a healthy 3910 grams.

Baby Daniel was the one and only child born in town this year so far, and was the best surprise the family of eight could hope for.

"He's happy and he's healthy and it's just the best feeling starting a new year with a newborn child," Mr Liaw said.

"We've already got five children, including Lyndon, 23, Craig, 13, Jaylin, 11, Jossie, 9, and Cree, 1, so new bub was definitely a surprise package."

With five other children though the family aren't short of helpers.

"Cree, our youngest, has already been in for a visit and considers Daniel to be her baby," Ms Fleiter said.

"We've got a big family and we're of the belief that if we're meant to be blessed with more children we will," Mr Liaw said.

The Calliope couple is of the view that baby Daniel will be lucky last and therefore chose to name him after his father.

"We just decided on it then, but Daniel really wanted his name to be with one of the kids, for tradition," Ms Fleiter said.

Father Daniel has a couple of weeks off from working out in the Biloela mines to spend with the newest addition to the family.
