No regrets about leaving the coast to live in Gladstone

IT'S a change of scenery shifting from the Sunshine Coast to Gladstone. But when the move is for the right reasons, it's easy to settle into the Central Queensland way of life.

For Damien Dodd, it was a simple decision to make the move, as he followed his wife, a teacher transferred to Gladstone, five years ago from Caloundra and he has nothing but good things to say about the easy living in Gladstone.

"It's a great place," he said. "I'm really into my fishing and the kids love heading out to the dam and the new pool and slide are open, which they enjoy."

Mr Dodd works as a trade assistant on the GLNG project and had been working at QAL before taking up his new role.

Despite being a relative newcomer to the region, the transient nature of the area means that even in his five-year tenure, Damien has seen plenty of changes in the Gladstone region as the town has changed to accommodate the industry boom.

"It's definitely got a lot busier and the amount of housing that's gone up in the last year or so is huge," he said.

Mr Dodd, a father of two young children, said the area was great for young families, with plenty of opportunity for kids to lead an active lifestyle.

"The kids haven't found anything wrong with it (Gladstone)," he said.

"The school's friendly, there are heaps of parks, the marina is huge and we've got plenty of sport, soccer and tennis, which keep them happy," he said.

Despite the quality of life his family leads in Gladstone, the lure of home still dangles in the distant future for Damien and his clan.

"Maybe down the track we'll hopefully get back down there (Sunshine Coast) but it would mean I might have to go FIFO, which I don't want to do," he said.
