Dad who threw baby dodges jail time

A crazed father who threw his baby off a roof during a housing protest has walked free from court.

The 38-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after he hurled his one-year-old daughter from the top of his shack in South Africa.

He had climbed on top of the shack, protesting against dozens of homes being lined up for demolition.

Demonstrators watching the stand-off chanted "throw throw throw" as the father of the girl dangled her in the air by her ankle, and threatened to hurl her to her death below.

Magistrates in Port Elizabeth were told the girl was thrown into the air but fortunately a cop ran forward and caught the toddler in mid-air.

The man was initially charged with attempted murder.

But on Thursday he was handed a suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of child abuse.

He was fined 5000 rand ($A485.67) and handed a sentence of one year in jail, suspended for five years, Mail Online reported.

It was said there was a long queue for the land that had been inhabited illegally with 90 shacks, built at the Joe Slovo township in Kwadwesi.

Authorities ruled the makeshift homes should be pulled down and demolished.

Rioting then broke out between police and 150 protesters.

Heart-stopping images showed the moment the girl was thrown from the roof.

The brave officer on the roof realised the father was going to drop the youngster at any second and suddenly rushed him, but not before he flung his daughter over the edge.

For agonising and jaw-dropping seconds, the toddler fell through the air before she was caught by a cop below.

The man was then grabbed and pulled off the shack handcuffed, arrested and charged.

Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said at the time, "Due to the dangerous threat to the safety of the child police set out a plan to rescue the little girl and arrest the male, and one of our officers caught the girl as she was flung."

Cpt Beetge said the baby was handed back to its 35-year-old mother, and their case is being overseen by local social services to ensure the child is in a place of safety.
