'Likely cyclone' off coast could affect Rocky and Mackay

A MONSOON trough in the Coral Sea that is likely to form into Queensland's first cyclone could deliver heavy rain and winds as far south as Mackay and Rockhampton.

Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said it was unlikely anything the size and reach of last year's ex-cyclone Oswald would hit Queensland but it was still anybody's guess how the next few days would unfold.

"These systems do have a very wide range of impacts ... quite often south of the system will feel the effects too," she said.

"As it heads over land it spreads everywhere.

"Even though it may be further north now, we will probably see showers right down as far as Rockhampton.

"There's a chance it could head towards the coast mid to late week.

"They look like little circles now but they pack a punch.

"It's anybody's call of how big and the impacts."

Ms Westcott said there was lot of cloud around Willis Island on Monday and it was already pretty windy around the coastline in northern Queensland.

"It's somewhere in there forming. It's spinning around slowly gathering moisture and steam," she said.

"The effect really does depend where it ends up and how long it sits out on the seas. That's a little hard to call but it's not going to Brisbane."

Ms Westcott said living in Queensland it was always best to prepare for the worst because such weather events took their own trajectories and things could change day by day.
